I have wanted to do a post about Snapchat vs Instagram for a long time.
Unless you have been hiding under a rock – you will be aware of the war that exists between the two socials. Who copied who and how did they get away with it? Most importantly, what did the CEO of Snapchat have to say…
According to Mary Meeker’s 2016 Internet Trends Report – Snapchat has more daily active users than Twitter. Snapchat has been said to have over 150 million daily active users worldwide.
Not bad for an app thats only been around 4 years…
So why haven’t we discussed this sleeping giant sooner? Well it wasn’t until the beef begun with Instagram did we see Snapchat as a social threat.
They say imitation being the highest form of flattery and that is exactly what we are seeing Instagram do to the Snapchat empire.
On August 2, Instagram added a new feature called ‘stories’ – Gee that sounds familiar.
It essentially works in the same way Snapchat produces stories.
Well played Instagram.
Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom admitted his platform was copying Snapchat, with a few notable differences. Discussing it with TechCrunch, Systrom said, [Snapchat] “deserves all the credit.” His justification is that Stories is a format and Instagram will “put its own spin on it.”
For PRs and Marketing pros it will be an exciting time to watch Snapchat’s progress over the next 4 years.
Let the beef continue. Round 1 goes to Instagram.
